Subject: Fwd: Deeply depressed

Dear Asha volunteers,

Please see the email below. I removed the name of the victim. This was a personal email not meant to be widely circulated. Given the nature of our society, please respect their privacy.

I have been attached to this project for more than 10 years. Nishtha is working for students in red light area https://ashanet.org/project/?pid=756

I propose that we release INR 70000 (roughly 1000 USD) to Nishtha, mostly for fighting the battle for this girl. Please let me know ASAP what your thoughts are. We need to take votes before releasing the funds, and I think it will be faster to discuss it over email. Please note that at least six votes are needed.

Please use the "reply all" option so that you share your opinion with others.

Best,
Abhyuday

Dear Abhyuday, Anu and Padmanava,

We have become deeply depressed to know that (***), one of the teen-aged daughters of Nishtha has brutally been raped and after the rape she was severely been injured by a sharpened blade by a young adult today at about 12 noon. She is an active member of the adolescent group.  It seems to be very tough task for us as the culprit happens to belong to an influential family.

Our all staff members went to the village and the adolescent group members went to smash the house of that culprit and they caught the boy and tied him with rope. Majority of the adults have gone to local Mela (Fare) due to Bengali New Year. The group members contacted Local Police Station and Police has already arrested the culprit.

Now, (***) has been admitted in a hospital by our staff members and her group members also. Now, her condition is very grave due to extreme bleeding. I was also in the hospital.

Hope, you have understood that the gravity of the mental turmoil under which we and the little girls of groups have been.  Adolescent group members are extremely tender aged.

We have been handling so many cases under our free legal aid service but the progress of those cases is completely disappointing as progress of court cases is very slow. In case of (***), we wish to have justice within a quick succession so as to create an example that there is law and order in our country. So, a famous and expert criminal lawyer needs to be involved immediately. But it is very costly.

(***) is our daughter and we will fight for her justice till the end of the case keeping our life at stake. We have all hope that you all will be by our side till we get proper justice.

Hundreds of girls of Nishtha groups demand justice making demonstration in front of the local Police Station. Inhuman torture on an innocent girl can’t be tolerated by me at all. How long we will have to tolerate all this beastly atrocities?

Regards

Mina
